Swimming Pool Safety
On hot summer days, swimming is a fun and enjoyable activity for anyone. Whether it's in a backyard pool or a public pool, kids and young adults like to cool off and spend hours wading at the pool. And just as anybody likes to swim, it is worth knowing that most accidents occur in and around the swimming pool. A lot of swimming pool accidents happen very suddenly and at times without warning. Drowning can result in serious injury and children's death.
This is why everyone should ensure proper safety when going for a swim. Parents should practice basic safety precautions and know the risks involved whenever their kids go swimming. Know the proper care and maintenance for your swimming pool to avoid pool-related accidents. Below are some basic pool safety tips to remember:
Always have adult supervision. There should always be a non-swimming adult available to supervise swimmers. Just because a person knows how to swim doesn't mean that he's safe to go swimming on his own. You never know when you can develop cramps underwater or hit your head when diving. To increase pool safety, a number of persons should be around the pool area to help when such untoward incidents happen.
Make children attend swimming classes. For kids to better enjoy swimming activities, enroll them at swimming classes to learn basic flotation and life saving techniques. Their fear of the water would be mended early on and they would feel safe in the water. Nonetheless, no matter what age or swimming skills, always accompany children in the pool. Don't allow kids who have no knowledge of swimming in and around the pool.
Enclose the pool when not in use. Don't leave pools open and accessible to children as they can easily fall inside. Keep kids away from the poolside by enclosing the pool with high fences. For backyard swimming pools, you can keep the pool and your kids safe by using manual or automatic safety covers that completely conceal pool water. But make sure that your child doesn't walk on these covers.
Keep at hand life saving devices. To ensure pool safety, life saving flotation devices like life rings should be kept near the pool. Such rescue equipment should be clearly marked in the pool area and readily accessible. Place ropes and float lines across the pool to designate the shallow end from the deep end of the pool. These alert swimmers of the depth of the pool. Check and make sure that all safety equipment are in good condition.
Don't leave toys and floaters in and around the pool. While pool toys and games add to the fun and enjoyment when swimming, these should be properly put away for safety and security. Don't leave them lying around the pool area as these may also cause serious accidents. Likewise don't leave kids alone even in portable pools or other small water bodies like fountains, buckets and barrels. These may also pose the danger of drowning.
Keep chlorine and pool chemicals in a proper storage area. Pool cleaners and maintenance supplies should be kept out of reach of children at all times. These contain highly toxic chemicals which are harmful to people when exposed in great amounts. Remember that chlorine used in the pool is a lot more concentrated than those used in the tap.
