Since skiing is a seasonal endeavor, it is important that avid skiers know when a typical ski season starts and when it usually ends. This knowledge will help skiers take advantage of the best skiing conditions. Different months may offer different ski conditions for visitors. This will also depend on the elevation of the ski resort.

Generally, a typical ski season averages from five to six months. Location and resort elevation may also play a factor on how long a ski season lasts. Ski resorts on higher elevations may surely enjoy longer ski conditions and may stay open for tourists longer. The different months will also offer varying conditions on which you may be able to do your skiing.

If you plan to ski on months before Christmas, prepare for ski runs that may not have the best ski condition yet due to lack of snow. During this time, ski conditions may depend on the weather. Snow storms may provide good snow cover to ski in.  But it would still be better to go to resorts at higher elevations and those that are equipped with snow making machines and snow cannons to make sure that the resort may be able to provide good snow cover even at so early a time in the ski season.

The month of December is already considered a peak skiing season although underlying ski resorts may not yet be guaranteed with ample natural snow cover. It is usually the highest elevated ski resorts that enjoy the most number of visitors. A vacation during this time may be considered expensive.

January is considered as a lull in the ski season since most tourists are already heading home after Christmas and the New Year celebrations. This moth is usually characterized by quiet ski resorts with empty runs. This is also considered as the coldest month of the ski season and a time that only attracts the most avid skiers who look for less crowded ski runs.

February is considered as the best time during the ski season for lower lying resorts. This month is usually blessed with good snow conditions along with ample sunshine. This is also the time that ski resorts also begin to fill up again and the prices go up again. March is the perfect month for ski resorts on higher elevations. This provides the best setting for the most memorable of ski vacations. This month is characterized usually by longer days with sun along with good snow cover. Crowded ski resorts are typical during this time as well as with more expensive rates at the ski resorts.

April is considered as the last month of the ski season. Later spring conditions begin to melt down snow cover as summer approaches. It is best to head on to only the highest ski resorts to enjoy the best snow cover that may still be left at the ski runs.
