Basketball Shooting and Passing Techniques
Basketball can be a challenging sport to master. One might need to learn a variety of skills in order to become good at it. Each skill may take some time to learn and can only be mastered through hours and hour of practice. Learning just a single basketball skill would not be enough to make you a good player. In order to excel in the game, fundamental knowledge of the basic skills should be learnt by heart and mastered through constant exercise.
One of the essential basketball skills that every layer should learn is shooting. Shooting is the act of trying to score by throwing the ball through a hoop or basket. It can be done on all areas of the court. There are different methods of trying to shoot the ball. There is the basic way of shooting a ball through the basket.
In order to do it, a player must position himself facing the basket with feet about shoulder width apart. The knees should be slightly bent with the back straight. The player then holds the ball with both hands with either the left or the right hand having more hold on the ball depending on the player's dominant shooting hand. When going through the act of shooting, the ball is made to rest on the fingers of the dominant hand as it is being lifted slightly above the head.
Aiming is done by aligning the forearm into the direction of the basket. Then the knees are bent slightly and then extended almost as the same time as the shooting arm is being extended until it becomes straight. The skill lies in trying to let the ball roll right through the fingertips with some help from the wrist. This way the ball is placed on a steady back spin that provides some control as the ball glides through to the basket. An ideal trajectory as the ball leaves the hand is also being practiced since a good shot comes from the ball having a good trajectory as it goes towards the basket.
Aside from shooting, passing is also a skill that needs to be practiced and mastered. The art of passing cannot be stressed out too much as a skill that every basketball player should have. Passing is a method of trying to move the ball from one player to another on the court. One thing to remember is that there are different kinds of passes being used in the game of basketball. The variety is what makes the game so interesting to watch.
The staple pass used in basketball is the chest pass. This pass is simply done by directly shoving the ball on chest level onto the chest area of the receiver. Another type of pass used is the bounce pass. This pass is made by bouncing the ball crisply about chest high from the passer and directed towards the court floor instead of directly to the receiver.
The bounce pass might be more complicated to do than a chest pass. But it is also a kind of pass that is hard for opponents to intercept. Then there is also the overhead pass that is used to pass a ball over the defenders head. This kind of pass is accomplished by releasing the ball while it is over the passer's head.
