Fly fishing involves the use of different equipment made specially for this type of fishing method. Fly fishing does not use the same equipment as the usual cast fishing rod and reel. Here are some of the essential fly fishing gear that you should bring with you on your every fly fishing trip.

Fly Rod

The premier equipment for fly fishing enthusiasts, the right fly rod will ensure that every fly fishing experience will be as good as the next one. The fly rod is used for casting and allows for the fly line to be casted with power and accuracy. A good fly rod and good fly casting skills allow the fly lure and fly line to be placed expertly on the water without scaring the fish where you plan to catch.

The fly rod also functions to provide line control. Once you have your fly out on the water and it is floating away, the fly rod allows you to have control over the line that is out on the water. The fly rod is designed to both set the hook on a fish and durable enough to fight and land the fish. In order to do so, a good fly rod should be flexible and strong enough to bend without either breaking or snapping.

Fly Reel

The main requirement of a reel is that of a line holder. You might not think of it any other way, at least not until you have a big fish tagging on your rod. At this point, the fly reel becomes an important part of your fly rod. An excellent fly reel should be able to take the pressure as a fish caught tries to yank out yards of fishing line. Prefer using fly reels that have adjustable clutch drags, spare spools, good line capacities as well as excellent wearing qualities.

Fly Line

The weight of the fly line itself makes it possible for the angler to cast the fly bait. Without the fly line, line cast would prove to be a difficult challenge. Using the wrong fly line is just about as bad as using no fly line at all. The main function of a fly line is to provide the weight to deliver the fly to where the angler wants it to go. A line that is very smooth to avoid friction and of a weight that is compatible to your rod is usually the best choice.

Flyboxes

Flyboxes are special containers valuable for every fly fishing enthusiast. They are usually used as storage spaces for the different fly lures that the angler may need or has accumulated over a number of fly fishing years. Dry flies are usually kept in flyboxes with enough depth to prevent the hackles being crushed. Wet flies on the other hand can be carried in foam-lined boxes or wallets. Flyboxes provide a more organized storage space to the angler.

Line Cleaner

Frequent casting on water or grass will usually pile up some dirty coating on your fly line. If not cleaned, this build up will create some friction and affect casting efficiency. The dirty coating can also help wear out rod guides little by little and cause a floating line to sink. That is why you may need to keep your fly lines clean always. All you will need to do is to stretch your fly line out and rub it down with a line cleaner.

Landing Nets

When you are able to hook a big fish, you may need a landing net to haul it in. Landing nets are available in a number of designs like the folding type or the tennis racket shaped net. A landing net should be light, convenient to carry and have a soft woven mesh that is strong enough to handle a struggling catch yet soft enough not to damage fish.

There are other fly fishing gear available that may not be as essential but can make your fly fishing trips more convenient and enjoyable. If you plan to venture into deep water, you may need a pair of fly fishing waders to keep you dry at all times. You may also need a wading staff especially if you wade into rivers with slippery rocks and fast currents. A wading staff would make venturing into rivers easier and safer.

You might also need a pair of sunglasses to help you see better into the water and provide UV protection for your eyes. A good hat may provide you with a welcome shade for your face during hot and sunny fishing trips. Bringing along a sunscreen lotion can also help you from getting sunburn while stand under the sun for long periods at a time.
