rock climbing gearRock climbing, compared to trekking and hiking, poses a different challenge. Rock climbing takes a literal meaning since you are facing a vertical spot. Depending on the trail, a little rock climbing is needed in some mountain climbing trips. Here are some of the equipment needed to conquer that ascent.

carabiner - it is a metal loop with a sprung or screwed gate. It is used to connect and fasten. Most carabiners used in climbing are made from aluminum. They can be bought in outdoor shops. Do remember to not drop your crab.

kernmantle rope - it is constructed with its interior core, called the kern, protected with a woven exterior sheath, or mantle. It is designed to optimize strength, durability, and flexibility.

harness - a harness is used to secure a person to a piece of rope or to an anchor point. Harnesses are utilized to provide comfort and security. Climbers usually use a sit harness. It is a waist belt with leg loops which are connected with a belay loop or carabiner.

quickdraw - it is used by climbers to attach ropes. Quickdraws allow the rope to run through with minimal friction.

belay devices - belaying is the act of protecting a climber from falling using a rope, friction, and an anchor. Their purpose is to lock off the rope with minimal effort. Belay gloves are recommended to prevent rope burn.

climbing shoes - rock climbing shoes are the preferred footwear. They are covered with a vulcanized rubber layer which adds friction to increase the grip of the foot on a rock face.

ice axe - in high altitude or alpine climbs, an ice axe comes in handy.
