Mountain Climbing Gear
It is such fun to get lost, figuratively that is, in nature. One is away from the bustle of urban life, problems left at the foot of the mountain, while enjoying the sights from the peak. However, before traveling to the wild outdoors, be sure that everything necessary to be able to survive the journey should be in the checklist. Here are some of the most important stuff one needs to bring in a mountain climbing trip.
Backpack - first and foremost, you must have a durable bag to store all the stuff you will need. Things to consider in choosing a quality backpack is its sturdiness and your comfort in carrying it. The bag should be made of long-lasting materials that can withstand the wear and tear of traveling.
Footwear - preferably used in climbs are boots. Besides its fit, boots should have traction and a decent sole to absorb the impact of uneven surfaces, while at the same time have grip on wet, slippery grounds. Additional footwear like sandals are optional in order to let your feet rest while in the campsite.
Socks - socks are important because they cushion the feet and prevents blisters from the friction caused by the boots rubbing the skin. Socks also keep the feet warm and dry. According to AMCI Mountaineering Club, Inc., it is advisable to wear two pairs of socks. The inner pair should be of a breathable fabric to keep moisture away, while the outer socks should be thicker to insulate the feet and pad them from the boot.
Sleeping bag - rest is important for a climber and a good rest entails comfort and warmth. A sleeping bag should provide both and keep you dry. In addition, it should have good insulation, compact, and lightweight.
Tent - a good shelter protects one from the elements. In looking for a tent, take note of its quality, size, and weight.
Clothing - one should wear the appropriate clothing based on the conditions of the location. Basic wear consists of a shirt, a pair of shorts, a cap or bandanna, socks, and recommended footwear. In cold weather, you could suit up with a windbreaker, fleece jacket, and jogging pants. There is also a process called layering where you wear clothes over the other in order to keep heat from escaping the body. Gloves are optional to keep your hands warm while protecting them from getting bruises and scratches.
Stove and cooking utensils - it is now common to see climbers bring with them portable camp stoves for convenience. Basic cooking utensils to be brought include different sizes of pots, a frying pan, kettle, plates, a mug, bowls, forks, spoons, and knives. It is recommended that you improvise so as not to bring a lot of unnecessary utensils.
Water storage - water is a key element when going on a trip. You must remember to always keep yourself hydrated. Take sips instead of gulps so as not to run out of water midway of the climb. Water coming from rivers need to be treated and filtered before it could be considered safe for consumption.
Emergency equipment - there are situations where unforeseen circumstances occur during a climb. You should always be aware and be prepared for any accident. A flashlight, a first aid kit, extra food and clothing, repair equipment, survival kit, a pocketknife, matches, and a whistle are some of the things you might not get to use at every climb, but they are lifesavers when the need arises.
