The Irony of Global Warming

Water will be a crucial resource once global warming worsens. It is said that as the climate turns warmer, there will also be more rainfall and glaciers will melt.

Though this may sound like water will be abundant, it will be the other way around. According to the Scripps Institution for Oceanography, if there is a seasonal change on the flow of rivers, that can mean that water may be abundant in spring but not during the summer season.

If nature itself has acted as a reservoir in the past, it may not be the same as for the present. That is because if water becomes present all at once, there is a possibility that it can not be contained.

Because of this, there now appears the problem that if water systems that cannot hold a season of runoff water, they may have dilemmas concerning their water customers.

As stated by a researcher in the University of California, global warming brings about more rain but less snow just as what happened way back in 1999. Thus there may be plenty water when it is not needed but only little when it is needed the most.

In a previous study, it has been known that the water available for people in Sierra Nevada may decrease to about 15 to 30 percent. Canada may also experience the same dilemma in their agricultural production. Likewise, in Europe, the Rhine River Basin may experience a certain amount of decrease which may affect both industry and agriculture.

But that is not all. Several key industries may also get affected, such as flood protection, shipping and hydro-electric generation. Moreover, the problems that melting glaciers bring are threatening. For once the glaciers melt, any replacement for the water they can offer seems unlikely.

Greenland and Antarctica have been experiencing melting of glaciers as conducted in several studies about global warming.

It has been estimated that glaciers may disappear in a matter of a few decades. With its disappearance, people who have become dependent of their existence may be heavily affected.
