The Wallaby, Unusual Pet
The wallabies, looks like a rabbit with very large feet , can be very good pets. The animal can be house trained, can live for 10-15 years, are relatively small and manageable, are hardy little creatures, and are really cute.
Wallabies are actually marsupials and are native to where else but the country down under, Australia. Although, a number of species can also be found living in New Zealand and nearby regions. A member of the kangaroo family, the wallaby looks pretty much like a small kangaroo except for the size. It has the same big feet, long tail, and rabbit-like faces. Unlike their cousins the kangaroo which can grow to as tall as 2 meters or 6 ft 7 in, the wallabies' size ranges from 18 inches to around 3 feet tall. Over 30 kinds of wallabies exists in the wild inhabiting mostly forested areas and semi-arid plains.
Raising wallabies as pets can be quite difficult at first. It is utterly important the protect your home from your wallaby pet. Just like baby-proofing your home, installing precautions and protections in your house would benefit both you and your pet. A wallaby can open cupboards, easily jump on counters and can reach unexpectedly high places.
Don't be surprised if your pet jumped in with you while you're taking a bath. They seem to like that. And don't be annoyed if they kick you out of your own bedroom and turn it into their own private sleeping quarters. That's why training them early would make your life easier.
When the joey, baby wallaby, is less than a year old, you should keep him or her inside the house. At this stage the joey is still small and quite vulnerable. You will have to wan the joey for a year or more. But, after it reaches two years old, the wallaby should be kept outside as many times as possible.
Wallabies in the wild are herbivores and naturally grazing animals. No matter how much you house trained a wallaby, he or she will always try and graze on the carpet in the absence of grass if you keep them indoors for long periods of time. It would be ideal, therefore, to maintain a large grassy play area, about 50 by 50 feet, where your marsupial pet has plenty of room to hop around.
Wallabies eat grass, hay, vegetables, fruit, herbs, and roots. They need to graze on organic grass only. Fruits, vegetables, roots, and herbs can be given. Do not give your wallaby any vegetable from the cabbage family like broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts. These foods can cause the wallaby with digestive problems. Aside from their vegetable diet, they need to bit the branches of edible woody shrubs to keep their teeth strong and healthy.
With the right care, your wallaby joey can grow up well trained and well adored.
