Set Up a Wi-Fi Connection

Wi-Fi has become a byword among people who usually do their work while going from one location to another. A highly mobile worker may look into a Wi-Fi Internet connection as an invaluable tool to stay connected even while out of the office. In order to ensure that the worker makes use of a Wi-Fi connection to his or her advantage on the job when out and about, here are some tips that will help the mobile worker set up a Wi-Fi connection.

In order to establish a Wi-Fi connection on different Wi-Fi locations they might find themselves in, mobile workers should have a good idea on how to set up their mobile gear just for the purpose. Laptops may need to be configured in order to be able to detect Wi-Fi access areas or hotspots whenever it is on range. There are some Wi-Fi cards that can automatically detect and connect to different Wi-Fi networks. But the mobile user should also know how to be able to create a connection or set up the Wi-Fi card manually.

Things to Consider

When connecting to a Wi-Fi network, one should know some important things before attempting to set up the connection. Finding out what the SSID, WEP key, channel and mode to set up is important to ensure that the right connection is established. This information can be provided by Wi-Fi providers. Some provide the information after purchasing access to the Wi-Fi network.

Before considering setting up the connection, mobile employees should make sure that a firewall program is installed and working on their computer before getting some Wi-Fi access. This is to make sure that the data on the laptop is provided with some protection from being stolen through the Wi-Fi network.

Once the laptop has been turned on, click on the Wi-Fi icon that will show the connection, strength and duration of the network. Through the "properties" menu, connections of different Wi-Fi networks can be found or even set up. To add a network connection, you might need to know the SSID and enter it on the text box provided. Sometimes a WEP key that acts as an encryption key for your laptop to recognize the Wi-Fi signal. When successfully added, the new connection network can be seen on the "Available Networks" box.
