Public Relations for Small Businesses

In starting any business thinking about public relations is important for the future. Most people associate PR with simple advertising and the huge amounts of money that goes with it. PR isn't just advertising and you can get good public relations without having to spend half of your company's annual budget.

Here are a few simple tricks to let others know about your business:

Get your company ready – Before you can sell your business to other people everything has to be in order. If you have products to sell make sure that it is available when you get the word out. Or if you have a service that to provide it would be wise if you already have the trained personnel to provide it.

Know your market- What does your intended customers read? Where do they shop? What are their spending habits? Information is the cornerstone to a successful PR campaign. Knowing your audience will help you reach them with the appropriate message. Placing numerous ads on a tabloid is useless when your target audience is reading the financial papers.

Hatch your own PR plan- You don't really need a degree in Public Relations to do this and if you are a struggling small business you don't have to outsource to come up with your own PR plan. Simply put a public relations plan is coming up with the objectives of your business, the way you want to be known to your market, the strategy you will use to promote your business and the means to go about it.

Use the power of the media- Nothing sells your business more than using media and letting the world know all there is to know about your company. Press releases are an important and often getting it printed is a surefire way to generate buzz about your company. If you've done your research about your audience then you will be sure to know the type of media that would be more effective in reaching them.

Keep your message short- In creating your press release it's important to remember that you're not writing a novel. Write only the most salient facts about your company. Editors are more likely to accept your press release if you stick to the message.

Getting media coverage- A human interest story about your company would give journalists and reporters more drive to feature it. Winning an award or bagging a top client are some of the ways that would make the media spotlight turn its' glare on your company.

Create your own network- Often small time businesses have a hard time getting the local media to feature them. Word of mouth is also a very effective weapon and your small network of acquaintances can turn into an army. Send out your own PR packets, join any organizations or community projects.

Start your own Website- The Internet is a fantastic way to reach a variety of clients without resorting to the traditional media outlets. A domain isn't that expensive to buy and your website doesn't need to be the most aesthetically pleasing on the web. So long as you can show that you're expertise on your chosen field it would draw more clients to your company. A website also has the added bonus of being interactive with your clients.

Join Seminars, Trade Shows- Offering to speak in seminars lends you an air of authority to your clients. Seminars would also give you an idea about your competition and allow you to compare your own product. Trade shows are an inexpensive way to reach potential clients.

Public Relations is an effective tool to generate more business for your company. The real trick to good PR is knowing when to use it and using it well. Any publicity is good publicity but it doesn't have to cost you an arm and leg just the initiative and persistence to get it.
