Interior Design for The Home

After watching tons of lifestyle programs on television, and after seeing how professional interior designers approach certain situations or turn around a disastrous home designs, you decided to go ahead and design something on your own. You said to yourself that everything, it seems, is very easy on television so you might as well give it a try. Well actually, the basics of interior design is not that hard to grasp. All you need is the desire to decorate, the right tools and equipment, and a great and easy work plan to follow.

The first step, of course, is to know what you want. The illusions or dream of enjoying a grandiose home is no longer that far fetched. The more you think of the thing you want, the more you can conceptualize a great plan for your interior design project. Remember that what you are going to do is put together all the pieces of interior design concepts that's floating in your head and attempt on making something tangible out of it. This is why you need to have a workable plan since every successful interior design project has a great one.

Your first assignment is to gather more information. Although, you might be thinking that your TV lifestyle programs is enough exposure already. It could be but it pays to be more informed. You need to try and get as many ideas as possible like comparing color schemes, the furniture used and how they were arranged, the use of various accessories, and so on. TV is great place to gather information, no doubt about that, but you should also take a good look at various magazines. You can even start clipping articles and photos to create your own interior design “bible.” Showrooms and window displays can be great sources of ideas as well.

By keeping an open mind and seeing everything with fresh eyes, you will be able to accept new concepts that you've never thought of before or come to realizations regarding your own design. Example, you were bent on using a red color scheme on a kitchen setup but after seeing an actual setup in a showroom, it suddenly hits you that it is not what you really want. This is what I meant by keeping an open mind. Every bit of information you gather will help you move forward with your interior design project.

Keep in mind that interior design is not pure decorations, you will need to consider functionality as well. You can create a map of every room where you can move assign places where your pieces of furniture will go. Some professionals use a “maquette” as their maps. This way, they can place little pieces of furniture to move about the map and can better visualize how the setup would be like.

The following are some of the basics in home design that you might want to read to get that interior design project going.

Room size is a very important consideration. The available space will dictate what furniture and other features you can put in it. If you have something too big, don't force it in. The functionality of the room will be lost to the overcrowded and over decorated design. Big room, big furniture and more room for print designs. Small room, less furniture and less used of printed designs.

Learn to use the color wheel. It will show you the right combination of colors to create a more harmonious effect. Neutral colors such as white, black and gray are used as foundations of a room scheme.

Be guided with a focal point or a point where it demands attention. Everything you design should be built upon and around this focal point.

If you have collections, avoid scattering them around the house. A collection looks best if they are organized and placed in a single area in your house.

Try combining these elements in your design project. Keep a number of options so you can go back and take another look. What's important is that you make your home welcoming and comfortable.
