How to Clean Your Light Fixtures

House cleaning is not easy particularly in high places like light fixtures. Here are our tips to rescue you from the burden of cleaning the light fixtures of your home.

Duster – A duster is the your most common tool for cleaning light fixtures. At least once a week, start by dusting the lampshades then proceed to the chandelier. Tap the duster on your foot to shake out the dust. The dust should fall to the floor, where it is easy to vacuum.

Grimy shades – For greased, grimy lamp shades, clean off the dirt with a dry sponge. Use long and firm strokes. When finished, clean the sponge with soap and water.

The right fixtures – Choosing the right kind of light fixtures actually makes cleaning easier, such as a hard-surfaced lampshade.

Crystal cleaner – Use rubbing alcohol to clean crystal ornaments. First, remove the ornaments from the light fixture. Pour about a cup of alcohol into a glass bowl, dip each ornament into the alcohol and lay on a thick towel to air dry. The alcohol will evaporate, leaving no streaks on the ornaments.

Metal cleaner – If the metal parts of a light fixture begin to tarnish, you can clean them with a polish that is safe to use on metal.

Change all bulbs – When one light bulb burns out on a multi-lamp fixture, go ahead and change all of the bulbs. This will keep them all on the same cycle.

Clean the switch plates – Aside from cleaning the lights and shades, don't forget to clean the switch plates as well. Remove the switch plates and clean them with soap and water. Use an old toothbrush to clean grit from the grooves. Dry thoroughly before putting them back on the light switch.
