How to Make a Beautiful Thanksgiving Dinner Table
Fixing your Thanksgiving table need not be a hassle. The right mix of creativity and simplicity will give you a superbly interesting table set-up this year.
Choose a plain colored tablecloth. White is a great choice because it's easy to match with any color. Plus, it sets off any decorative item you may want to add to the table. Avoid table cloths with designs or patterns as they make the table look crowded and overwhelming.
Select a color theme. The usual color choices should reflect the fall period which are ranges of yellows, golds, reds and browns. Buy napkins whose colors go with the theme. Some napkins have pre-printed fall designs on them which might work for your theme.
Find a cornucopia basket. This can serve as your centerpiece representing the bountiful harvest. You can leave it empty or fill it with fruits such as apples and pears.
Create paper designs that reflect your theme to give color to the table.
Leaves - choose paper that has realistic leaf colors and which fits your theme. Cut simple leaf designs. Save some to be made into arrangements and keep the rest to use loosely.
Leaf arrangements - make a small bouquet arrangement with some of the leaves and place them around the base of a glass candle holder. Finish the design with an orange/gold/yellow candle.
Strewn leaves - strew some of the individual leaves on the table. Make sure that the colors match your theme.
Napkin rings - create napkin rings and name tags also with pieces of paper.
Cut thin strips of paper and adjust them to fit around your folded cloth napkins. Glue or tape them in place. You can choose different colors just as long as they match.
Make name tags from some of the paper. You can use a matching color of dark mustard type paper to stamp the letters on or you can use gel pen to write the names.
Placemats - place strips of colored paper diagonally overlapping each other to make diamonds that fit the rectangular shape of a placemat. You can also try making other shapes.
Look to nature for inspiration.
Use natural elements to enhance the look of your table.
Buy miniature squash to decorate your table. These usually come prepackaged with their own color and charm. Select those that still have tendrils to add a nice touch.
If you can get clean fall leaves, you can add them to the table or create an arrangement with them using pine cones and twigs.
Use fruits such as apples and pears in small displays and arrangements.
Use unshelled pecan nuts to enhance the harvest theme. You can place them individually on the table or as part of displays and arrangements like your cornucopia basket.
Set the rest of the table like you would normally arrange for a dinner party.
Use your best silverware, flatware and glassware. If you chose not to buy themed napkins, use white or plain-colored ones that match the theme, and set the name tags in place.
