Making Christmas More Meaningful

Christmas has become all about gifts, decorations, outfits, etc. Basically, Christmas has become commercialized. What's worse, it in a way, fosters materialism. Here's how to change all that.

Reflect

Take some time off from your everyday activities. Spend a quiet moment alone and think about what Christmas means to you. Think about the reasons why you celebrate it. Think back to past Christmases and remember which activities made the most impact on you. Talk to your family about your thoughts. Encourage to reflect also what Christmas means to them.

Christmas traditions

Ask family members and your parents about traditions from when you were younger or from when your kids were younger. Relive these traditions make it your (family's) own.

Start a new tradition

Start a new tradition this Christmas. It could be as simple as taking turns putting the Christmas angel on top of the Christmas tree or taking time volunteering for a charitable organization.

Make your own gifts

Instead of buying expensive toys and clothes as presents, encourage your family to make your own gifts for each other. Try your hand at some craft projects.

For your neighbors, instead of cake or gift baskets that they probably get from other people as well, why don't you do something for them instead? Extend a helping hand for instance. Think of things that will make a difference for them.

What's really important

Usually there are dozens of things that need to be done during the holidays. But take some time to think, are all of them really necessary? For instance, is putting Christmas lights in each and every plant in your yard necessary? Instead of doing these things, won't you rather spend that time being with your family and friends and enjoy the holiday activities?

Christmas hamper

There are a number of organizations in your community that provide hampers during the holidays to those in need. Encourage your whole family to put together that will make the family who receives it happy this Christmas.

The importance of giving

Christmas is the best time to make your children understand the importance of giving, not just during the holidays, but throughout the year. Instill this virtue or value in them by encouraging them to give a gift to a needy child. You may ask your child to choose from his/her collection or better yet, take them to a store and let him/her choose the gift.
