Kid-Friendly Christmas Recipes
Christmas is a family holiday that everyone can celebrate. As for your kids, do not just let them enjoy the holidays by receiving gifts, have them help out in preparing simple meals for the Christmas lunch or dinner. Here are some kiddie-friendly recipes that your children would love to help prepare and eat.
Sugar Snowflakes
Your kids have probably created those paper snowflakes in school. Why not have you kids create those snowflakes and eat them, too?
You will need:
Flour tortillas
Scissors
Powdered sugar
Instruction:
Have your kids gently fold a tortilla into quarters. Remind them not to crease the tortillas or it will tear.
Cut designs out of the folds. It's just like how they would cut paper snowflakes, although they have to be extra careful this time.
Unfold the tortillas to reveal the snowflake design.
Turn on the stove and put oil on the pan until hot.
Fry each tortilla until golden brown and crispy.
Sprinkle the fried tortillas with powdered sugar. Enjoy!
Peanut Butter Bears
Your kids will surely love to create these bears out of crushed graham crackers.
You will need:
½ cup peanut butter
¼ cup margarine or butter
¼ cup shortening
2/3 cup granulated sugar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
¾ teaspoon baking soda
1 egg
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup finely-crushed graham crackers (about 7 cracker squares)
miniature semi-sweet chocolate pieces frosting (optional)
Instruction:
Beat peanut butter, margarine, and shortening in a large mixing bowl using a electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds.
Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, and baking soda. Beat until well-combined.
Beat in egg and vanilla.
Beat in as much of the flour and cracker crumbs as you can with the mixer on medium speed, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally. Stir in any remaining flour and crumbs with a wooden spoon.
For each bear cookie, your child could shape some of the dough into the following parts: 1¼ inch ball for the body; ¾ inch ball for the head; three balls slightly smalled than ¼ inch for the nose and ears; two 1½ by ½ inch logs for the arms; and two 1¼ by ¾ inch logs for the legs.
Assemble each part into a bear and decorate each bear cookie before baking by pressing in chocolate pieces to serve as eyes and paws.
Bake in a 325ºF oven for 15 to 18 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
Make about 20 bear cookies.
Cranberry Tarts
Your kids can join in as you prepare this great holiday snack!
You will need:
1½ cups sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon allspice
1 large apple, peeled, cored and diced
3 clementines (or tangerines)
1 cup cranberries
½ cup chopped pecans
1 prepared pie crust or 10 prepared tart boats
Instruction:
Mix sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and diced apple in a heavy saucepan.
Wash the clementines and remove the stems. Cut them in half. Chop the halves into pieces and remove the seeds, leaving the peel on.
Add the clementines in the blender, cranberries, and pecans into the saucepan.
Cook over medium heat until the cranberries burst. Put the saucepan away from the stove to cool.
Place the filling on tarts. You can also use them as a pie filling with a latticed top.
For the tarts, cook at 400ºF for 10 to 15 minutes or until the edges are slightly brown. For the pie cook at 400ºF over for 30 to 35 minutes.
