How Blend Christmas Tradition and Religion

Some families with religious backgrounds may feel like they can't have Christmas traditions such as Santa Clause, Christmas trees, Christmas lights, etc. because they might not impart the religious importance of this particular holiday.

However, combining religion and tradition gives families the chance to enjoy the best of both worlds: to participate in the fun traditions, yet still honor the real (religious) reasons for celebrating Christmas.

Religious decorations

Putting up decorations is something that the whole family gets excited about. Everyone gets cheerful because decorations are signs of the fun that is to come. Incorporate religion by setting up religious decorations such as the nativity scene, or the three kings, etc. Set it up outside the home to spread the spirituality of the holiday.

Read religious and traditional Christmas stories

This way your family will understand the religious reasons for celebrating Christmas and still be know the traditional and fun side of the holiday.

Listen to religious and traditional Christmas music

Music is a great way to add a festive feel to the occasion. At the same time, music is a great way to "spread the word" so to speak about the meaning of Christmas. So, let your family enjoy religious and traditional Christmas music. Explain the meaning behind songs such as say "Silent Night" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing".

Attend church on Christmas Eve

Before or after exchanging gifts with family and friends, attend church on Christmas Eve. Feel the joy of worshiping on Christmas, and then enjoy the feeling of being able to give to others, especially those closest to you.

Create your own family tradition

Start one that incorporates both the traditional and religious sides. Choose a religious charity to support or volunteer at shelter during the season. These traditions celebrate the virtue of giving and also celebrates selflessness and other principles that your religion espouses.
