How to Choose Safe Child's Toys
Make sure that your child's toys were manufactured in accordance with safety standards, and learn how to determine if a toy is appropriate and safe for your child.
Always read labels - To make sure the toy is appropriate for your child's age. Labels on toys should tell you if they are non-toxic and fire resistant. Avoid beads made from seeds or painted with toxic paint and any toys containing liquids that could leak.
Select the age-appropriate level - Make sure that the toy is appropriate for your child's age group - anything too "advanced" may be dangerous. The age-appropriate level for a toy is determined by safety factors.
Look the toy construction - Always look for toys that appear to be well constructed and that clearly include age recommendations on the labels. Avoid buying toys with small parts for children under 6 years of age.
Check the toy shape - Buy toys with smooth surfaces. Avoid sharp edges and blunt ends as well as brittle, plastic or glass products or metal pieces that can bend and cut.
Avoid toys with small parts - Small parts such as buttons, eyes, wheels, staples or bells can easily come off or be swallowed. The Small Parts Cylinder is a handy measuring device. If a piece fits in the container, the piece is too small for children under three years.
Consider the durability - Consider the amount of time you think it will hold children's interest, the level of creativity or challenge, and whether your children can find new uses for it as they develop new skills. Examples of multiple-use toys that grow with a child are blocks, puzzles and puppets.
Check sharp Edges and Points - Be cautious when you choose toys. Toys that are safe for very young children are well-made with no sharp parts, splinters or parts that will pinch. Wait until children are over 8 years old before you buy them toys that have sharp edges or points, heat up with electricity, involve water, or include mixable chemicals.
Make sure the toy is sturdy and strong - It is important to check to see if the toy you are buying is sturdy and built of strong shatter proof material. In case of any falls or accidents, the toy should not break into pieces with sharp edges as this can cause bodily injury to the child.
Check if the toy is too loud - In case the toy you are buying is sound enabled, check if the noise levels are tolerable and the toy has volume control. Too loud toys can permanently damage the sensitive hearing of children.
