Tips for Preventing Frostbite and Hypothermia
Winter may be a fun season for kids because this is the time when they can play with the snow outdoors. However, certain precautions are needed to be followed, especially where the health and safety of your child is concerned. Among the things that a parent should be concerned about is frostbite and hypothermia.
Frostbite is a condition that occurs when the skin and the outer tissues of the skin freezes up. Kids are prone to frostbites because their bodies are not yet that strong to shield itself from temperature that is too cold for their young bodies.
Meanwhile, hypothermia is a condition that happens when the temperature becomes too cold for your child to bear. This overexposure to cold temperature is likely to cause shivering, slurred speech, a decline in the body temperature, and lethargy.
To avoid these conditions, restrict your child from playing outdoors too much, especially on days when the temperature is really cold. In cases when your child insists on playing outdoors with his or her friends and you find it difficult to stop him or her, at least protect him from contracting frostbite and hypothermia by having him or her wear the following:
- thermal long johns
- pants
- jacket or sweater
- more than one shirt
- socks
- boots
- gloves
- hat
The use of the clothing listed above is not a guarantee that your child will be safe from winter mishaps. That is why it is still important to supervise his or her activities all the time, just to make sure that your child is well and safe.
