Avoidance, Inhibition and Shyness
Shyness can actually have an effect not only of the person but also on people surrounding him or her. For the painfully shy, avoidance and inhibition can become a common thing where the effect not only is limited to the person but can also extend to family members, friends and colleagues. There are many instances where shy people resort to avoidance and inhibition in order to escape their fear of being rejected.
Instances of Avoidance and Inhibition
In various instances in their daily life, shy people tend to use avoidance and inhibition in order to keep themselves away from the usual social interactions as well as from the possible fear of being out of place or being rejected. It seems to be the easy way out for those people who try to shy away from other people.
One of the instances that this can be noticed is when people have the habit of canceling going to social events at the last minute. Others may try to avoid taking part in activities that others would usually enjoy doing. As a habit, this can eventually develop into pessimism and passivity.
With less and less social interaction, shy people would then relegate themselves to more impersonal modes of communication such as increased use of computers and phones, which do not require any face-to-face contact.
Causes of Avoidance and Inhibition
There is an underlying cause why people would try to avoid and inhibit themselves from interacting with others as much as possible. This habit can be temperamental or biological in nature. Some people can be highly reactive emotionally or are overly sensitive naturally that they try to shun social interaction in order to avoid a potentially volatile situation.
Stressful life events can also help contribute to avoidance and inhibition from interacting with others. Embarrassing and shameful experiences can cause one to shy away from other people's company. Sudden changes or disruptions in family life can also cause people, especially kids to avoid new company or inhibit themselves from getting to know the people from a new neighborhood.
Overcoming the Habit
It is possible for shy people to overcome the habit of avoiding social contact. This can be done with the help and support of loved ones and friends. It is important to bear in mind that shy people do not do well when pressured. Slowly but surely, you can help shy people from overcoming the habit. It is better for shy people to start out achieving small and manageable tasks and goals. This will help them become more and more familiar with the bigger goals ahead.
