How To Discipline Your Child: Age 9-12
Just as with all ages, kids in this age group can be disciplined with natural consequences. And as they mature and ask for more independence and responsibility, here are some parenting tips that you should try to follow.
Teach them to deal the consequences of their behavior
This is an effective and appropriate method of discipline. For instance, your 9-year-old has not done his or her homework before bedtime.
It is best not to help him or her finish, and instead let your child stay awake until the homework is done. The latter teaches your child that if he or she does not do homework earlier, your child will go to school without it the next day and will most likely suffer a bad grade.
Let your child fail sometimes
It is natural for parent to rescue their child from any mistakes, but in the long run you will be doing your child a big favor if you let him or her fail every once in a while.
Your child will see what misbehaving can mean, and will probably not make those mistakes again.
However, if your child does not seem to be learning from natural consequences, set up your own consequences to help him or her modify the behavior more effectively.
