Thanksgiving Games for Your Family
Thanksgiving is one special holiday where families pass down their traditions from generation to generation. If your family does not have one yet, why not start creating one? For starters, having an array of fun games during Thanksgiving is bound to create good memories to last for years. Here are our suggestions on enjoyable Thanksgiving games for the whole family.
Popcorn Relay – You need two teams of four to five members each. Set out bowlfuls of popcorn at one end of the room and an empty bowl at the other end. Using a measuring cup, each team member must transport the popcorn from the full bowl to the empty bowl, making sure that he or she does not spill the popcorn over. The team with the most amount of popcorn after two minutes wins.
Hoop Sticks – This is a traditional Native American game. Tie an 18-inch yarn or twine on one end of a 12-inch wooden stick, making a “hoop” at the other end of the string. Holding the untied end of the stick, catch the hoop through your stick using only one hand. If younger children are going to play, reinforce the hoop by wrapping it in masking tape.
Turkey Hunt – This game requires kids who would serve as turkey hunters and an adult who would serve as the leader. With the help of your young children, draw or paste a picture of a turkey on 25 index cards. To play, all the kids leave the room. Then the leader hides the cards around the room. At the go signal, the hunters return to the room and begin hunting for turkey. As each turkey is found, it is brought back to the leader who corrals them in a separate pile for each hunter. When all the turkeys have been found, the hunter with the most turkeys is the winner and becomes the leader for the next round.
Where is Mr. Turkey? - Another variant of the Turkey Hunt, but this time all you need is a turkey doll. One player is designated as the hunter and the others are helpers. The hunter leaves the room, while the helpers hide a small toy turkey. The hunter then returns with a mission to find the turkey and the helpers give clues by “gobbling” like turkeys. If the hunter is not close to the turkey toy, the helpers gobble very quietly. As the hunter gets closer, the helpers gobble more and more loudly until Mr. Turkey is found.
Pumpkin Race – This is a simple racing game that requires two teams of four or more members, two sturdy sticks, and two medium-sized pumpkins. All they have to do is the roll the pumpkin to the other end of the yard or room using the stick, around the turning point, and back to the starting line. The next member then rolls the pumpkin. The team who completes the task first is the winner.
Stool Ball – You need a lightweight three-legged stool, a soccer ball, and a strong stick. Place the stool in the middle of the yard. One player defends the stool with the stick as the others stand behind a line about 10 to 15 feet away. Each player takes a turn at trying to knock over the stool by throwing the ball at it. The defender uses the stick t bat the ball away. The player who successfully knocked over the stool is then deemed as the new defender of the stool, then the game is played all over.
Bird, Beast, or Fish – Everyone sits in a circle facing the leader. The leader points to one of the players and says “bird.” The chosen player must come up with the name of an animal that fits the category before the leader counts to ten. Once answered, the leader then points the the next player at the right and says “beast,” then to the next player for “fish.” Remember that there should be no repeating of answers all throughout this game. If the player does not respond in time, he or she is out. The game continues until only one player remains.
Twenty Questions – Choose someone or something related to Thanksgiving. One player say, “I am thinking of a person, place, or thing.” The other players then try to guess what it is by asking no more than twenty question, which can only be answered by either “yes,” “no,” or “I don't know.
