Creating a Moving Checklist

ad space

Moving is a big deal, and as such people tend to get flustered and lose their heads in the flurry of activity.

What you need is to have a checklist that works. Make one and stick to it.

Start by making a timeline countdown so you'll know what you'll need and when.

Two months is sufficient enough time to plan things. You can start your countdown from this time line.

2 months before moving day

Reserve your rental truck.

Use up stored foods and organize a yard sale or plan to make donations.

Order your packing materials.

1 ½ months before moving

You should start packing your things by this time. Contact family members, friends, creditors, etc.

Inform them that you're moving.

You should also get your family's school, medical, dentist and x-ray records.

1 month before moving

Continue packing. Review your checklists to make sure you didn't miss or forget anything.

If you have pets, make arrangements for moving them. Hold your yard sale by this time.

2 weeks before moving

Inform utilities of your approaching move. Have your car or truck checked (serviced). Lock your safety deposit box and pick up your dry cleaning, if you have any.

1 week before moving

Arrange for your kids and pets to be cared for somewhere else for moving day. Fill prescriptions that you might need. Pack an immediate needs box.

This one goes in last and goes out first. This contains all the things you will need to continue your daily routine while you are still unpacking.

2-3 days before moving

Finish packing. Pack you suitcases. Defrost your fridge and put baking soda in it to get rid of the odor.

Review your checklist.

1 day before moving

Dismantle any furniture items to save time (and space) on moving day.

Moving day

Take your kids and best to the placed you had previously arranged for. Review your final checklist.

Once all your things are out of the house, do a walk through. Check your closets, basements, attics, sheds, etc.
