If you have already decided on adoption then you now should think what type of adoption you will use.

What is open adoptions?

Open adoption, both the adopters and the birth parents know each other's name. They may agree to exchange letter and photos.

Choosing between confidential and cosed adoptions

Neither the adopters and the birth parents know each other. They do not meet. All the arrangements are made through the adoption agency.

You may not be fully aware that you do have options in the adoption process. They should not feel pressured to any one option. You can change adoption agencies if they do not advocate open adoptions but you want that option.

The pros and cons of open and closed adoptions have been endlessly debated by social workers and psychologists. Adopters need to deal with an agency that they are comfortable with the side they have chosen.

Open adoption

  • In open adoptions your child will never have to search for his birth parents.
  • The adopted adult can therefore easily establish a relationship with the birth parents.
  • The child can  have a positive relationship with the birth parents.
  • You'll also be more at ease knowing who is the birth mother of your adopted child.
  • The birth mother will also be less likely to change her mind about the adoption if she knows you.
  • You'll also be made aware of any genetic illnesses because the birth mother can easily contact you if she has a change in her health status.

Closed adoption

  • You can be assured that you won't gain an extended family in the birth mother.
  • Closed adoptions won't attract birth mother who aren't sure about the adoption process and may change her mind in the middle of the process.
  • Your child may not wish to ever find out about his birth parents.
  • If the parent is unstable then any contact with the child is out of the question.
  • You'll see yourself as more of the birth parent if you don't know the biological mother.
