The Fuel of the Future
Human life has been dependent on fuel to live. And the fuel used by humans have developed from ordinary firewood during pre-historic times to the present fossil fuels now being used in today's most industrialized society.
The use of fossil fuel has greatly helped in propelling us into advancing to where we are today. But along with that development, we may have done some harm into the environment brought about by the use of such fossil fuels.
Air has become more polluted with the continuous use of fossil fuels that has escaped through the air. The use of fossil fuels may also have a hand in the release of greenhouse gases that have been seen to have increased temperatures by preventing excess heat from escaping into the air.
Just as humans have found different forms of fuel throughout history, maybe it is high time to look for an alternative to fossil fuels. And scientists have seen that hydrogen may have a promising future of being that alternative.
The use of hydrogen as a possible alternative to fossil fuels has generated excitement in the scientific community. Research and studies are underway in order to help develop the possibilities of hydrogen as the fuel of the future. Hydrogen was eyed as the alternative because of the many supposed benefits.
For one, hydrogen is the first element in the table of elements, making it the least complex of all the elements found on earth. Not only that, hydrogen is also the most abundant element in the universe, making it a readily available alternative fuel source.
Another perceived benefit of using hydrogen as fuel is that it is more safer and cleaner to use. As a gas that exists as a gas under normal atmospheric conditions, hydrogen is odorless and non-toxic. Hydrogen's byproduct, when used as an alternative fuel, is water. That makes it a better fuel to use when it comes to having the least environmental impact.
Another thing about hydrogen is that it can also be safely transported from one place to another. It would not likely cause such environmental disasters such as oil spills which have happened so numerous times when fossil fuel products are being transported.
Scientists also believe that hydrogen as fuel can be more efficient. By using hydrogen in fuel cells, power is generated through chemical reaction rather than combustion, which have been the method used in harnessing the power of fossil fuels. In terms of energy efficiency, a hydrogen fuel cell may be able to convert 40 to 65 percent of hydrogen into electricity.
With the many perceived benefits of hydrogen as a possible fuel of the future, there are still some roadblocks to hurdle when it comes to its ongoing development. There may be some who might opposed to instituting hydrogen as the next fuel alternative simply because oil is still big business. The change towards a hydrogen economy may have an significant global economic impact that might disturb a number of countries, especially the oil producing ones.
Another supposed roadblock is that some industries are not fast in trying to change into a hydrogen economy. This also affects the development of the hydrogen fuel because not so many industries may be that keen on accepting them in the near future.
Such industries may be thinking of the possible high costs of the transition and may well have using the hydrogen fuel as the least of their priorities. But the hydrogen fuel has a future that is just to good to leave behind. There will come a time that the whole world would finally embrace it as the primary source of fuel to power up the global economy into the far distant future.
