How Does Shopping Cart Software Works

When you deal in e-commerce selling different products and services on the Internet, you may have already heard of an online shopping cart. An online shopping cart is a software application on an e-commerce website that allows customers to search for products in its catalog and then placing chosen product on a "basket" for placing an order later on.

This helps your customers look over the catalog and choose the products they like, then click on them to mark the ones they like that goes into the online shopping cart. As customers click on certain products, the software can lead them to the ordering system page to make it easier for the to make purchases.

Essentially, all shopping cart software follow the same structure. The application usually includes a database that stores product information, a storefront that displays this information to website visitors and then an administration area that allows the website owner to manage orders or the e-commerce site.

And since the information about the products are located at the database, the shopping cart software only creates pages for the products once a customer clicks on a specific product. The pages are generated by the shopping cart software only at the instance that customers on the site requests for them. This means that an e-commerce site selling over a thousand products need not create over a thousand web pages and store them on the web server.

There are other features that an online shopping cart software can provide. Primarily, it provides an online ordering system that customers can use to conveniently choose products from the site and set them aside for placing orders later.

Shopping cart softwares can also have features such as a store building system that helps you handle the different web pages as well as the orders for products on the same site. This would be especially be valuable for online sites that keep an online catalog of products that number in the hundreds or even the thousands. Trying to keep track of all of them would need the capabilities that an online shopping cart software can provide.

The shopping cart software can either be categorized as licensed or hosted software. Licensed shopping cart software are those that are downloaded and then installed in a web server. The advantage of such software is that they are bought for a one time fee and that the e-commerce site owner usually holds the license to them and therefore can host them on any web server, provided that it meets the server's requirements.

Hosted shopping cart software are those that are being provided by the web hosting provider and is never download. Advantages of using such software includes never having to deal with complex issues regarding the use of such application on your website and instead leave it to the hosting company to do the necessary updates and placing new features on them.
