It is just like getting together with your friends and talking about music or movies or sports, playing music is a way to communicate. It is a get together to achive a common goal, to make music.
Being a part of a band or trying to put one together, and trying to stay together are all about choices. As you start out your own band you may have to experience making a lot of choices. You may need to experiment, and learn from every mistake and every good decision. After all, the experience of musicians who have been working as bands for a while have made them become even better through the years. Growing as musicians, you'll find all sorts of great ideas if you try working with some great players who you would want to be a part of your band, no matter what is it your band plays.
The main and probably the most important ingredient of a great band is desire. What you think you can achieve with your band is all in your head. If you and your friends really love music and are determined to create your own, then you'll do it. As soon as you can play complete songs and have the stamina to play for at least a half an hour at a time and still have the passion to do it all over again, then you'll be ready to play for a crowd.
The first thing that you do in starting a serious band is look for your members. It is always interesting trying to meet new people withwhom you share something in common musically. If you know you want to play music with people, ask around your area who thinks the same way too. You can jam with other musicians to see if you click playing with them. When you get comfortable playing with a buddy, add one or more other friends who can play with you.
Technically,as soon as you and a friend get and play together, it becomes a band. The more friends you get to play with you, the merrier. Your music is only limited to the creativity, the energy and the passion that you attempt to put forth. Talent is all relative to the people you play with as well. The great thing about making music is its simplicity. There are hundreds of songs that are easy to play and some of the most enduring songs are the most simple.
The typical garage band has the following members- one or two singers, one or two guitarists, a bass player, a drummer, and perhaps a keyboardist. Other instruments can be added to this lineup fi you think it would make your sound more unique. Depending on who's available to play on a given day, the number of players can go up or down.
Chemistry with each other is very important. As a group, you all act as a support group trying to help out each other. With practice, you will be able to hone your ability to play songs that will make you become more of a band. A band is more about fitting the right people together to make some good noise than it is about individual ability.
Starting a band is a big step, even if you don't think so. Why? Because it shows that you're ready to work with others to make something that's bigger than you can create all by yourself. It all comes down to your desire to perform your musical creations for other people. The important thing is to always be sure that you never compromise your own ideals when playing your band will not last and will eventually whither from creative tension.
