Megadeth is an American thrash metal band hailing from Los Angeles, California. The band was formed by front man guitarist Dave Dave Mustaine after his departure from Metallica. Megadeth is considered to be a pioneer of the American thrash metal scene which also made them famous especially in the international stage during the 1980's.

Dave Mustaine formed the band after he was given the boot in 1983 from Metallica due to too much drinking as well as drug use. He formed his new band after two months due in part to exact revenge on his former band who fired him. He wanted to have songs that are heavier and faster than his previous band. Hence, he found a niche in the music scene where his band eventually was considered as pioneers.

The band went on to release six studio albums and six live albums, several of which became multi-platinum and gold records. The band broke up in 2002 but has since reformed beginning in 2004.
