StumbleUpon, The Remote Control of the Internet
The internet has been an interesting piece of technology. Despite its vastness, it is excellent in integration. StumbleUpon is a nifty web tool that you could have fun playing around.
In summary, StumbleUpon is a web browser add-on which lets you surf random sites that fall under your category of interests. This pretty much acts like a virtual remote control of websites you like to view.
Installing StumbleUpon is easy. Download the toolbar then install it into your browser. After that, you will be prompted to fill up a profile in the StumbleUpon website where you could choose your interests. All in all, the whole process could be done in less than five minutes.
Much like Conan O'Brien's "Walker Texas Ranger Lever", you simply click the stumble button on the far left side of the toolbar, then a random webpage that matches your interest shows up. After that, repeat the process. Are you having fun yet?
More than fun random surfing, StumbleUpon has a number of features as well. You could rate sites by giving them a thumbs up or a thumbs down, write reviews for sites, and add new sites in the cacophony. All of these features are in buttons on the toolbar.
There is also interactivity in the social bookmarking tool. You can add friends and stumble through the sites they submitted and contributed.
Two things StumbleUpon are not is that it is not a social news site and it is not a social networking site. StumbleUpon is a surfing tool, browsing randomly in particular. Unlike social news sites which tags the most popular or the newest, StumbleUpon is pretty much come what may.
Although the program has social networking-like features, it is not a full-pledged social networking site. The features work more as a way of providing you more options for your interests.
All in all, StumbleUpon would not replace your usual online itinerary of your regular sites. Rather, it is an add-on in times of idleness or in times where you are in the mood to megasurf.
