Chat Room Etiquette

If you are new to the world of chatting, there are some rules or guidelines you must keep in mind:

Respect other chatters. If chatter says some rude or disrespectful things to you, just ignore him/her. Do not reply with disrespectful comments of your own. Avoid using offensive language or attitudes when chatting.

When entering a new chat room, get a feel for the climate of the room first before joining the conversation. If you do not like the chat room you can simply leave and go to different one.

When choosing a nickname, choose one that is appropriate. Do not use obscene nicknames.

Remember that you can be indentified. Most chat rooms keep files of all interactions between and among chatters. Once you log in on the server, it records what your IP is. Plus, since servers keep files, they can identify your IP. They can forward the files to your ISP who can pinpoint the exact address where the PC you used is located.

Always address a person by his/her nickname. It can get confusing to chatter if you do not identify who you are directing your message to.

Use capital letters only for emphasis. Other chatters may get annoyed by your constant "shouting".

Never reveal your real name or other personal information in a chat room.

There are some people who join chats just to annoy others. You may find yourself being verbally abused or insulted. As was mentioned earlier, do not respond to these insults.

Welcome new comers to the chat room. Treat them with respect. Remember that you were once a newcomer too.

Finally, enjoy your time chatting with other people. Learn never to take things seriously, and remember to always use chat etiquette.
