The PC is constanly evolving with more and more applications developed to make our lives more enriching and convenient. Now our lives seem to revolve around the PC as it becomes more and more essential to our everyday dealings.
As the PC becomes more of a necessity, taking very good care of it takes on a whole new approach. As a necessity, more and more people cannot seem to continue living normally without using the PC daily.
In order to prevent unecessary downtime in using it, every effort must be made to make it run efficiently all of the time. Every threat must be made a non-factor and every solution to problems that may arise well-thought of way before they happen. Here are some things that you can do in order to make sure that your PC is always well taken cared of.
Computer systems have become more powerful, smaller and even more portable with each passing year. If you aren't careful, anyone can easily steal a part or your computer itself. Never risk to leave your computer, especially laptops, unattended in an unlocked room. At home or even at the office, be sure to always keep your windows and doors locked and your workplace secured.
Physically secure your computer by locking it to an immovable object, such as a desk. There are many stores that offer various types of locking devices such as steel cables and special enclosures for your computer. There are also desktop docking stations for laptops available that can secure your laptops in the same fashion.
Never give your room key to anyone else. You are responsible for securing your computer. It would always be best to leave its safekeeping to no one else but yourself.
Create guidelines with regards to locking doors and windows when leaving your office or home with officemates or family members.
Electrical fluctuations can pose as a significant threat to your computer system. It can be the cause of data loss and lead to burned out computer components. You can protect your PC from such fluctuations in several ways. Avoid trying to plug your computer directly into a power outlet. There are relatively inexpensive surge protectors available and would go a long way in protecting a valuable investment such as your computer.
Unplug your PC during lightning storms, even if it is surge protected. The sudden powerful voltage jolt of a lightning can be enough to damage some parts of your computer.
Use an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) for your PC which can provide several minutes worth of power in case of a power failure. It would be enough power to enable you to save your work and turn off your computer properly.
As a general rule, always maintain data backups. It is a simple task to save your work to more than just one location. You can use a diskette, a writable CD-ROM or a personal file storage on another computer as alternatives for file backup purposes. In case of computer failure, you will always have a backup file available to go to.
Remember to take a proactive approach to PC virus protection. Preventing a virus from infecting your PC is relatively easier than trying to remove it. Make it a habit of using anti-virus software and keeping it running on your computer. Also always keep your anti-virus software up to date and protect your computer to the newest and most recent threats by downloading updates.
Safeguard and protect your password. Keep your password to yourself or never attempt to write it down. Many programs, allow you to automatically login to your computer. This may be a convenience for the user, but it may present a serious security problem because your password must be saved within the program. It would be better to require a password protected login to prevent others from getting access to your computer.
