Proper Etiquette for Visiting a Home in Egypt

When invited by a colleague in Egypt, be mindful that you are entering a home with a whole other culture. That is why it is best to follow these simple reminders.

Bring gifts when visiting a home - If you're invited to the home of an associate, bring along baked goods or chocolates as gift. Flowers are not acceptable gifts in Egypt since, in most parts of the country, they are seen as relative to funerals.

Remove your shoes before entering a home - Like in many Asian countries, you should remove your shoes before entering your colleague's home. Make sure that the soles do not point at a particular person. Also take note that you should also take off your shoes before entering a mosque.

Take note on how to give a gift - If you offer a gift, or when a gift is given to you, accept it with both hands or just the right hand. Never use your left hand alone.

Use only your right hand when eating - In most of Middle East, the left hand is reserved for body hygiene.

Never sprinkle your food with salt - This would offend your host since it is virtually a statement that the food is not good enough.

Do not eat everything on your plate - Leave some food on your plate to indicate to your host that the food served is abundant. It is considered a compliment to your host.

Do not offer alcohol - Many Muslims refuse drinking alcohol (even using rubbing alcohol and colognes). If you're hosting a party, be sure that you have other drink choices available.
