A Guide to Movie Genres
They are so many genres to film that at times it can get to confusing. A movie genre in general refers to the primary method of categorizing film. There are films that may share similarities in their narrative elements from which they were developed. It is this perceived similarity that places a film into a certain genre. Film genre in mainly divided into three types- setting, mood, and format.
The setting is the place or location where the film is set. The mod is the emotional charge that is being carried throughout the film. The particular equipment used to shoot the film or be presented in a specific manner in known as the format. Here is the further breakdown of the three main type of film genres:
Setting
Crime – this genre tackles stories that happen usually in places where its character is within realm of criminal activity.
Film noir – this usually portrays its principal characters in a nihilistic and existentialist realm or manner
Historical –these are films with stories that take place in the past
Science fiction – films that are set in an alternative reality, typically in the future or in space
Sports – films that tackle sporting events and locations pertaining to a given sport as part of the main story
War - battlefields and locations pertaining to the wartime era of the past
Westerns - colonial period to modern era films of the western United States with cowboys usually as primary characters
Mood
Action – this film generally involves a moral interplay between the forces of good and the bad exhibited through violence or physical force
Adventure – films with stories involving danger, risk, and/or chance, often done with a high degree of fantasy.
Comedy - films categorized in this genre are intended to provoke laughter and instill humor.
Drama - films that focus mainly on character development.
Fantasy - speculative fiction that is set outside of reality. Examples would be mythical stories or those of known legend.
Horror - films categorized in this genre intend to provoke fear in the audience
Mystery - films that deal with stories that progress from the unknown to the known through discovery and solving a series of clues
Romance - films dwelling on the elements of romantic love
Thrillers - films that are intended to provoke excitement and nervous tension to the audience
Age
Children's film — these are films made suitable for young children. Films of this kind make no special effort to attract any other audience.
Family film — films included in this genre are intended for audiences of all ages and especially suitable for viewing by a younger audience.
Adult film — films in this genre are intended to be viewed only by an adult audience. Film categorized in this genre may contain scenes of violence, make use of disturbing themes, use of obscene language, or exhibition of explicit sexual behavior. The adult film genre may also be used as another term for pornographic film.
