X-Men: The New Mutants
The New Mutants are a group of adolescent mutants who are under the X-Men umbrella. They are considered too young to be official X-Men but they are old enough to be able to start their training for them to start harnessing their mutant powers.
The first New Mutants team was formed by Professor Charles Xavier. The team was composed of Cannonball, Sunspot, Karma, Moonstar and Wolfsbane. Certain changes to the team initiated the introduction of Magma, Magik, Warlock and Cypher.
It was in this particular X-Men team that they learned the value of working as a team while being the rambunctious teens that they are. However, they would pay a costly price for their youth as Cypher was shot as he saved Wolfsbane from a bullet that for her.
There was a time when Professor X needed to leave for space in order to recuperate after a tussle with the Brood. The team was left without a leader and it was during this time that they eventually joined forces with the Hellions who were their rivals. It was led by Emma Frost and the New Mutants came under the leadership of a modern Magneto.
Several changes happened after the initial forming of the team. Magik regressed into a little girl after the Inferno Saga. Rictor, Sunspot and Wolfsbane left the team after the X-Tinction Agenda, Warlock was terminated by Cameron Hodge. Sunspot went to run his father's business and Moonstar remained in Asgard.
After the X-Tinction Agenda, the New Mutants were led by the mutant soldier Cable and they became the strike team X-Force. This particular team was composed of their leader, Cable, Boom-Boom, Shatterstar, Domino, Warpath, Cannonball and Feral. Their first testing came when they fought Masque and some of his Morlocks. The team was also later joined by Siryn who helped in defeat Juggernaut in one of the issues later battles.
Recently, the concept of the New Mutants was revived as one of several teams of students at the expanded Xavier Institute for Higher Learning where they not only learn to master their powers, but are also given the chance to receive a full education.
The team is still composed of new, young mutants who understand what it is to be responsible for their powers and the actions that they do. The team has a lot of things to improve on but whatever happens, they still are part of the X-Men group and these will defend their turf any time of the day.
