Victor Emamanuel Carmelo D. Nadera - Making a Statement through Poetry
More than a poet, Victor Emamanuel Carmelo D. Nadera, is an accomplished and award winning writer whose influence in present Philippine Literature is as immense as that of Rolando Tinio. He was immensely involve with University of Santo Tomas; Varsiterian even getting the position as editor in chief. This passion for writing continued up to date, now being one of the most respected contemporary writers in the Philippines.
He is considered as the the Father of performance poetry in the Philippines fusing and expressing poetry in action.
Noble of his vision, is to use poetry in therapy, pioneering the idea in the Philippines. He took A.B.S. And M.A. In Clinical Psychology from the University of Santo Tomas. This is followed by his duty to his gift, using poetry in helping patients to recovery. Pioneering poetry therapy, he started this venture bu giving series of free sessions for cancer patients in one of the distinguished hospitals in Manila.
This initiative paved way with Goethe Asia, the first expressive arts workshop which was conducted at the National Arts Center in1995. As if his work is done, he continued to work with the National Commission on arts and Culture giving poetry sessions to sexually abused children housed and rehabilitated by Stairway Foundation in Puerto Galera in Mindoro. Poetry has evolved into a new tool of expression and therapy for the victims whose voices are muffled by silence.
Nadera started a new vision on poetry. Followed by the success of these workshoips, he was commissioned by the Philippine Society of Oncologists through an outreach program. His books which were launched in 2000, Poetreat, was a discussion of the use of poetry in therapy.
His works include: Asinta: Mga Tula at Tudla (2002)subsequently translating Federico Garcia Lorcas El Publico for Dulaang UP, and other plays for Tangahalang Pilipino and the Department of Tourism.
Nadera is the youngest recipient of the Recognition Award from the Commision on Filipino Language proclaiming him the Poet of the year in 1985. His passion for poetry exceeded the view of poetry as just a means of expression but as a tool to communicate truth on reality and its nature.
Among his accomplishments include: National Book Award (1995) from the Manila Critics Circle for his second book of poetry, 15 Lamang (1994), won the Rizal International Filipino Poetry Contest, Talaang Ginto Gawad Collantes, Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, and Carlos Bulosan Award. He co-edited Alagwa (1997), the collection of stories from Katha, that already published his fiction in Impetu (1991), Habilin (1991), Engkwentro (1989), and Relasyon (1999). His essay AIDS: Anyo, Imahen, Diyalektika’t Siste (1994) and play Cofradia de San Jose (1992) received the Cultural Center of the Philippines Grant. He is also a recipient the UP Gawad Chanselor as an Outstanding Artist in 1999, 2002, 2003, and 2004.
